McCaskill makes surprise visit at legislative breakfast

McCaskill

John Beaudoin, the Journal

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill was a surprise visitor at the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast March 5 at the Adams Pointe Conference Center. McCaskill joined Missouri State Sen. Matt Bartle and State Rep. Gary Dusenberg at the breakfast to discuss topics such as the effect of the federal stimulus money to the healthcare reform bill. "Just about every orange cone you see in Missouri is brought to you courtesy of the stimulus money," McCaskill said. She also addressed earmarks, saying, "I'm the only member of the delegation that doesn't earmark because I think it's a stupid way to spend money." A member of the audience told McCaskill he was disappointed about her vote on the healthcare reform bill and asked her to vote against it when it came back around, while another citizen encouraged McCaskill to vote for it again. "We want competition," McCaskill said. "Major League Baseball and healthcare are the only two industries that have those protections on pricing," she said, adding that MediCare is a "train wreck that is coming." Bartle strongly disagreed with McCaskill's healthcare stance, saying "The only way we are going to fix healthcare is when Americans start rationing." Bartle also handed out information and pie charts on the Missouri budget. "We can't borrow from the Chinese like Sen. McCaskill and Sen. Bond can do."
