The wife and I were out to watch a band a few nights ago. Yes, even though she is nearly six months pregnant, live music is something we still try and get out to see once a week or so.

Sure, she is a little bummed she can’t have her glass of wine or other assorted spirits now as we enjoy the bands, but she gets through it.

We were recently out to see a local Blue Springs boy, Troy Chrisman, and his band mates hit the stage at a local pub in Lee’s Summit.

(As a side note, we still like the bars in Blue Springs, but with them being smoking bars and, you know, her pregnant, we have not been as frequent to those establishments. I personally could care less if a bar is designated smoking or not, but some people seem to have some pretty strong opinions about it. I have to wonder how long Blue Springs can go without switching to all non-smoking. I kind of appreciate it that the local bar owners have fought that, but I can only speculate as to how long they will be able to hold off the moral police).

Anyway, Chrisman, a former Examiner newspaper co-worker of mine and current Blue Springs School District employee, puts on his rock and roll hat a few times a month and jams out with a band called Mary Goes Round.

As they belted out Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (yes, that’s only one of the many unusual covers they perform), my wife said the little one was doing cartwheels.

I would imagine that means the band either has a future fan or he or she didn’t necessarily appreciate that version of the song.

Or it could have been the nachos. I haven’t cracked the baby books yet so I really have no idea what makes the kid kick, move or make any other sudden motions.

The moving around continued for much of the set, though, which probably meant the music had some effect on him or her.

We probably watch live music about 30 or more times a year. I can sit in the park and listen to the local bands or hit the jazz clubs.

I have heard playing music in the house, perhaps some Miles Davis or something calming, could have a positive outcome on our newborn.

If nothing else, I will always have my Best of the 1980s CDs handy for the little one.

Make it a point this summer to see some local talent at Rotary Park in Blue Springs.

Beginning May 30, the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation hosts a free summer series on Sunday nights with great local talent.

Bring the kids, too. Music, in one form or another, is good for them.
