Man loses hand in fireworks accident

On Monday, a Blue Springs man lost his hand after an explosion while attempting to make an improvised explosive device with fireworks.

At 10:53 p.m. June 28, the Blue Springs Police Department and the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District were dispatched to the 3100 block of Southeast Third Street.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 21-year-old man with extreme injuries to his left arm and hand and an injury to his right eye. According to the Associated Press, the man lost his left hand. Another 21-year-old man was also injured, along with a woman who was inside the home at the time.

Both men were taken to a local hospital for their injuries.

The explosion occurred while the two men were attempting to make an improvised explosive device by wrapping multiple sparklers together with electrical tape, according to police.

The interior of the home was damaged extensively causing one of the exterior walls to be pushed off its foundation. The kitchen was also extensively damaged.
