Rudolph L. Hickel Jr., long time resident of Independence, died July 24, 2010 at Carmel Hills Nursing Home surrounded by all his loving family.

Rudolph was born Oct. 14, 1930 in Hoisington, Kan., the son of Rudolph Hickel Sr. and Mollie (Radke). He served proudly in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1975, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. He resided in Joplin in the early ‘60’s and received many honors including the Top Recruiter in Missouri and Kansas in 1961. Rudolph loved his country and was very dedicated to his service.

In 1967, he moved to Independence and started in the insurance business. He worked many years for Quality Star Insurance. During this time, he was very active in the Lion’s Club and he was numerous times a past president of the American Bowling Association. He was united in marriage to Sharen (Brown) on Sept. 13, 1974 in Independence. Rudolph was a very determined man and earned respect with his work ethic and genuine nature everywhere he went. He will be truly missed by his family.

Rudolph was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Eldon Hickel; and grandson, Trenton Scott Barker.

He leaves behind his wife, Sharen Hickel of the home; children, David Hickel, Warrensburg, Barbara Mallinson and husband, John, Bates City, Paula Pickett, Blue Springs, Dennis Moore, Independence, and Laura Barker, Independence; siblings, Cleora Tiede and husband, Jim, Great Bend, Kan., Janett Cook and husband, Ronald, Hays, Kan., Norman Hickel and wife, Merlinda, Great Bend; and three adoring grandchildren, Greg Mallinson, Lynsee Mallinson and Darian Barker.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., July 28 at Meyers Funeral Chapel, Blue Springs. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., July 29 in the chapel. Burial will follow at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery where full military honors will be presented.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Lions Club.
