A Blue Springs South student was killed last Monday night by carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Oak Grove Police Department.

Megan Wyatt, 17, would have started her junior year at South last week.

According to reports, the Sni Valley Fire Protection District received a call about a suspicious odor at a four-plex house in the 100 block of Dogwood between 6 and 6:30 p.m., Aug. 16.

“Using special equipment, firefighters checked the carbon monoxide levels of the apartment,” said Oak Grove Police Chief Bob Muenz.

According to the fire protection district, the levels at that apartment were 700 parts per million. At the apartment where Wyatt was killed, levels were 1,600 parts per million. Normal levels are less than 10 parts per million.

“At this time, firefighters forced entry into the apartment and found an unconscious Joyce Bentley, 62, and a semi-conscious Robin Ferguson, 16,” Muenz said. “(Bentley) was transported by LifeFlight to University of Kansas Medical Center and (Ferguson) was transported to a local hospital.”

Muenz said Wyatt was found dead in the back of the apartment.

“A car was found running in the garage that is connected to the four-plex,” Muenz said. “Right now, we’re treating this as a death investigation. We don’t yet know if it was an accident, suicide or intentional.”

Leslie Evans, director of information and technology for the Blue Springs School District said the school provided counseling services for students last week.
